In terms of the big dance it is going to take a conference title to get the Terps in. With Maryland's record standing at 17-14 (6-10 ACC), it is going to take at least one more victory to secure the Terps spot in the NIT. Plus, if they can knock the top ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, then the road to the conference title game will get much easier. Maryland is capable of making a run; however, it might be unprobable. They made an unlikely run in 2004 when they ended the season at 20-12 (7-9 ACC) and were very much a bubble team before making their ACC Tournament run. If the team plays like they did today, then they may be able to channel their inner John Gilchrist, Nik Caner-Medley and Chris McCray.
Terrell Stoglin had his best games of the season going 8-14 scoring 25 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Freshman Nick Faust continued his stretch of good play to end the season by adding 19 points on 6-10 shooting. It looks like the team is beginning to buy into Mark Turgeon's offense and are clicking at the right time. UNC will be a tough test for Maryland. After fighting to a tightly contested 9 point loss at home in February, UNC blew Maryland out in Chapel Hill by 24 points. UNC is ranked fourth in the country for a reason. In addition to another big game by Stoglin, Maryland needs Alex Len to step up again like he did in their first match up. With UNC having Henson and Zeller down low, Len contributed 12 points, 9 rebounds and four blocks. He needs to do the same tomorrow.
In addition to the big win, Maryland recieved a huge commitment from 4-star recruit Charles Mitchell of Georgia. This, along with the recent news of Terrell Stoglin considering leaving to go pro, has made it a news heavy week for Terp Nation. We will discuss Maryland's recruits and the future of Terrell Stoglin in future posts. For the time being, we should bask in the glory of the 2004 Maryland tournament run and hope that this years team can do the same
